Jets History: Jets vs Raiders Sept 28, 1963
Dick Guessman’s 35 yarder in the third quarter broke a 7-7 tie and was all the Jets needed in this early 1963 contest. A game that featured less than 500 yards of total offense in the run down Polo Grounds. Both teams turned the ball over six times. Jets QB Dick Wood threw five interceptions and was lucky to still come out on the winning side.
The Raiders finished 10-4 that year but it was the SD Chargers (11-3) who won the West. The Chargers then beat the Boston Patriots 51-10 in the title game. The Pats and Bills had both finished in first place tie at 7-6-1 but it was the Pats who beat the Bills 26-8 in a one game playoff for the rights to take on Sid Gillman’s Chargers (The AFL had no tiebreaker in place). The Jets finished 1963 at 5-8-1.
