WikiLeaks said Monday it will shut down by the end of the year if financial firms don’t end their “blockade” of donations.
The website, which has published leaked documents of varying classifications for several years, made its biggest splash in November 2010 when it began releasing selections from a trove of more than 250,000 U.S. diplomatic cables. The cables, about half of which were unclassified, were released in dribs and drabs for months.
Some of the cables — all of which are now available — have been covered by Corruption Currents.
However, in the days following the initial release of the cables, companies including Visa Inc., MasterCard Inc., eBay Inc.’s PayPal, and Bank of America Corp. prohibited payments to the site.
