I know there are people who like to stay within their own circle when it comes to social media, but there are advantages to branching out and following people who are outside of your group.
For one - and this holds true specifically on tumblr - when your friends are all laughing at some great, big inside joke and making pointed references to it and reblogging the hell out of each other, there will be other things to read on your dashboard besides reiterations of that joke.
There are far more important advantages. Finding new music, new things to read, different views on politics, religion, sports and all those other things you aren’t supposed to talk about in polite company. You may even find new people to connect with.
I follow 489 people. I follow close friends and family. I follow tumbrs that are about music and sports and even tumblrs devoted to specific people. I follow tumblrs that give me recipes, people who inspire me, people who make me laugh, people I’ve known for years and people I will never meet. I have different circles of friends. I try to make my dashboard as diverse as possible in order to get the maximum enjoyment out of the social site at which I spend the most time.
With that in mind, I’d like to offer this list of tumblrs you might like to follow (if you don’t already) in the hopes that my different circles of tumblr friends might interact and find even more interesting things to read, listen to, watch, enjoy or respond to and make your tumblr experience even more interesting.
[This is a pretty random sampling and by no means in order of preference on my part and I’ll probably do the same thing at sporadic intervals until I exhaust my follow list]
- Hockey Pants: Fashion faux-pas, ugly dudes, and bad ideas from the hockey world
- Give Me Something To Read: An editorial selection of the top articles bookmarked on Instapaper.
- crooked indifference: science. oceans. space. the developing world.
- cover song appreciation: just what it says
- the world’s game: soccer, futbol, whatever you want to call it, they have it.
- atencio: film director and pretty interesting person.
- rubenfeld: Sam is a journalist who currently writes for the WSJ (Commentary and news about money laundering, bribery, terrorism finance and sanctions). He drops his twitter timeline into his tumblr but don’t be put off by that because those tweets are full of interesting links.
- jbowesmusic: he writes a lot about music, makes his own good music and is an all around good guy.
- fuckyeahcarburetors: if you like things that go vroom. Which I do.
- pixel particles: beautiful, thoughtful photography
- trelvix: If you do not follow him already, just do it. Your dashboard will thank you. He strings words together like he’s weaving a blanket of absurdity and beauty.
- starehard: bubblegum for your blinkers
Of course there’s always my sister, my daughter, my dog and my best friend.
