The European Union is split on whether to go ahead with an import embargo on Iranian oil, diplomats said to the Wall Street Journal.
An intense debate among diplomats precedes a Thursday meeting of EU foreign ministers, who would have to sign off on the measures for them to go into effect. The EU is already planning to expand its Iranian companies and individuals sanctions list by 200, and to discuss the regional response to Tuesday’s storming of the U.K. embassy in Tehran.
In addition, the EU ministers are expected to expand sanctions on Syria, including an export ban on equipment, technology and software used in the telecommunications, oil and gas sectors, the Journal report said. Another 25 companies and individuals are expected to be added to the Syria sanctions blacklist.
