By “staying up on current affairs” I hope you mean obsessively checking every news outlet you can get your pixels on, because it’s going to be a frenetic ride, far more than it even was when I went in 2008.
Anyway. I would suggest contacting someone with each of the campaigns, because you might be able to get added to their press lists. If so, be prepared for an avalanche of email; within the torrent will be the candidate’s schedule and prepared remarks (if any) at each stop. Also, those contacts might help you get comment on anything one candidate says about the other.
If you’re going to be there for primary day itself, I’d find a polling place and talk to people going in to cast their ballots, or after they leave. (Don’t interfere with the people doing the exit polling, though.) You’ll also find people rallying for their selections there, and those voters make for good interviews.
